Gingerbread House with Sakura Crystal Lacquer!

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!

I know this may be a bit late for this year... but you have all year to make a little village for Christmas 2013!!!  All you need is Creative Paperclay®,  Sakura 3D Crystal Lacquer and Terri Sproul Mixers, a few cookie cutters and IMAGINATION!

Roll out Creative Paperclay® like cookie dough.  Cut clay with the Sweet Creations by Good Cook Mini Gingerbread House, small Christmas Tree and small Snowman Cookie Cutters.  I usually roll it out on a transparency so I can pick it up and ease is off.

Construct the house while it is still wet.  Use clay made into slip in the inside corners as a glue.

At the same time cutting clay make small thin tear drops for tiles on the roof of the house. 

When dry paint the trees with Terri Sproul Mixers-Green Pearl, sprinkle lightly with Terry Srpoul Ultra Fine Glitter and decorate with Viva Pearl Pens Gold and Red balls!  

Paint the snowman top hat with black craft paint and dry.  Paint with Sakura 3D Crystal Lacquer, while wet add black seed beads for eyes and buttons, then sprinkle lightly with Terry Srpoul Ultra Fine Glitter!  When dry add Bakers Twine for a scarf, add a dab of Sakura 3D Crystal Lacquer to secure at the knot.

Glue the tear drop shingles on the house using Sakura 3D Crystal Lacquer mixed with Terri Sproul Mixers-Copper Penny. Cover the roof with Copper Penny and sprinkle lightly with Terry Srpoul Ultra Fine Glitter!

Paint the house with Sakura 3D Crystal Lacquer mixed with

Terri Sproul Mixers-Shimmer Garnet. Add the window while the lacquer is wet and paint it Sakura 3D Crystal Lacquer mixed with Terri Sproul Mixers-Citrine. Let Dry.

Add snow with the Viva Pearl Pen White to the shingles on the roof, trees and snowman's hat. Attach the trees and snowman with Sakura 3D Crystal Lacquer.

  Prepping your project before painting. 

When you use molds like this one from Articus Studios or cut your paperclay with cookie cutters it is impossible to always have a clean edge. 

The images above and below were cut out with mini cookie cutters you can the rough edges around them. 

Here are a few of my favorite tools I use to clean up the edges.  The tools with the pink handles were made by Basic Grey several years ago.  I love the files, one is round and the others all have a little different shape. You can find files similar to these at the hardware store. One of my favorites to use are emery boards from the dollar store. Last, sand paper for bigger projects. Sand Paper can be torn or cut into smaller more manageable pieces.  

Most of the time I use a emery board, the files are for the hard to get to places.

Once you have cleaned up the edges of your paperclay peices you are ready to paint them.  For a good part of my projects I use Sakura Crystal Lacquer mixed with Terri Sproul Mixers.

Lyneen's Creative Paperclay® Quick Tip!

So you want to play with Creative Paperclay®, but you are afraid to because you don't know how to mold a doll, a figurine or any other object.  Well neither do I and I LOVE PLAYING with Creative Paperclay®!  Here are some of the tools I use when I play with Creative Paperclay®. 

These are tools (pictured above) I had when I used to make fondant flowers in my cake decorating days.  If you have any cake decorating supplies, think how you might use them working with Creative Paperclay®.  Just remember once you use any kitchen gadget with Creative Paperclay® it should not be used in the kitchen with food again!  

Articus Studios has some wonderful molds you can use with Creative Paperclay®. Here is one of my favorites - Frozen Charlottes!

Cookie cutters make great tools for special shapes.  At little cost you can find them at thrift stores.

Make your own molds using Amazing Mold Putty!!!  When I see something that I would like to have several of, I think about using Amazing Mold Putty.  Like the little cherub pictured, I only had one of him.  Since I made a mold I can have as many as I like using Creative Paperclay®!

Candy Molds are another great mold to use!  Just remember once used with Creative Paperclay® it should not go back in the kitchen! 

Use items to mold Creative Paperclay®.  Here I have an inexpensive mask from the dollar store that I am using as a mold for the clay.

Creative Paperclay® Charms

I am really excited to be a part of the amazing  Creative Paperclay® design team this term.  With the holidays approaching it is time for celebrations, parties and gift giving.

I thought I would share a few of my tricks while making holiday charms that could be used at your own party, given as a gift or decorate a gift bottle or package.  Be sure to give yourself plenty of time to make these to allow for drying times. 

CUTTING CHARMS

To start gather supplies: See list at the end of this post. Note: Once you use items from the kitchen with clay the tools should be used exclusive for clay or other craft projects in the future!

Work on a flat surface, a glass surface seems to work the best. Tip: I place a transparency on the glass surface to allow easy moving.  Sorry you can't see the transparency, believe me it is there! Work with small amounts of Creative Paperclay®, first roll it into a smooth ball, then between the spacers roll out the clay.   For spacers I used 3 pieces of chip board taped together with Viva Las Vegastamps Miracle Tape, making them about a 1/4 of an inch thick. The spacers help keep my clay a consistent thickness.  While working with Creative Paperclay® be sure to keep the unused portion of the clay sealed or covered in plastic so it doesn’t dry out!

  

Cut your charms, press hard so that you feel the glass surface below the cutters.  Tip: Gently pull the extra clay from around the cutters while the cutter is still in the clay.

Repeat the cutting process.  

  

Add dimension to your charms with really small cutters.  For the Christmas tree add ornaments and star topper. 

Using an inexpensive paint brush add water to the surface of the charm and to the back of the piece being added to the charm.  This creates an area that the clay will adhere to itself.  You can use glue if you prefer. 

If it is difficult to remove the small pieces from your surface, use a tool to remove them.  Tip: Leave the cutter imbedded in the clay while lifting from the surface.  This helps the clay keep its form.

Using the end of the paint brush put a hole in each charm.

Set aside to dry, this could take from 24 to 48 hours depending on the humidity and temperature. Mine took 48 hours as we do not turn up the heat in our house.  I like to let it dry naturally.  If you're in a hurry, you may put your unpainted pieces in a 200 degree oven for 20 minutes or until dry.  Watch CLOSELY!

Halfway through the drying time turn your charms over.  

PREPARE CHARMS FOR PAINTING

Sand the rough edges gently with an emery board.  For a sealed surface paint charms with a matte medium or gesso and set aside to dry.

PAINTING

Paint your charms with acrylic paints.  Gold was used here. The  acrylic paints can be  any that you may have around.  Set aside to dry.

For a little sparkle, add glitter using Ice Stickles and a bit of red Stickles for a splash of color.  Seal the paint and glitter with Sakura 3D Crystal Lacquer set aside to dry overnight.

WIRE WRAP

Prepare the wire wrap for the charm using jewelry wire and beads for added bling.
