Grand Army of the Republic
When I saw this postcard (mailed in 1908) I thought it would have been the sight of a famous battle defending this counties freedom . From my research I could not find any such history. The towns name comes from the first settler and proprietor of the Town of Canonsburg, John Canon. Much to my surprise it is the home of the second largest 4th of July parade in Pennsylvania.

What is the G.A.R.? "The Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) was formed on April 6, 1866 in Decatur, Illinois. What started as a benevolent society for Union Civil War veterans quickly became one of our nation’s most powerful veterans’ organizations. Membership was open to honorably discharged Union soldiers, sailors, or marines." -

The G.A.R. was concerned what would become of their history and artifacts when the last member passed.
CIVAL WAR ROOM
The Capt. Thomas Espy Post 153, Department of Pennsylvania the members of the Post were concerned when the last member passed. They made an agreement with Carnegie Library and the Cival War Room was created... "The Post was used for meetings and to house the veterans’ collection of flags, books, prints and relics from 1906 until the last veteran died in 1937. Not only does it retain invaluable artifacts, but it provides a unique historical record of the first part of the century.
