Etta Projects

I learned another group leaves for Bolivia in a few days, this time the group will include a team of Dental and Vision Care specialists. They will be working in rural villages hopefully alleviating some incredible dental pain and improving the ability to see for a few hundred.

If you would like to learn more here is the newsletter with details of one of their last visit. As I read it I was moved to tears. I take so much for granted. Clean water from the tap, our amazing sewer system and the grocery store just down the street. This is a great organization to learn more please visit their website!

Etta Projects Comprehensive Clean Water Project

Our water project is a sustainable, modular, movable system that provides a simple filter system and essential education. Experience tells us that a system installed without accompanying knowledge base is likely to fail. We create the education system so that any water system has the highest potential to be successful.

The Water Project has also been really good. Before my family and I drank whatever water without knowing there was something wrong with it. Both my children and I have learned a lot. The kids want to wash their hands and drink clean water now. They say to me, "Mommy, I will only drink water from the filter." This is the first time in my life that I have had this kind of service. I never never knew or thought about these things before. I was inviting illnesses into my home without knowing it. Now we know."

You have read plenty of posts on my blog about Judy's Junk & Java.  Finally I have a picture of one of our favorite hang outs.  If you are in Silverdale and the market for antiques and need a cup of java to give you a boost,  Judy's is the place to stop.  Stop by and chat with Paul & Dean!   You can also purchase coffee by the pound to brew at home!  

There is a welcoming garden as you walk from the parking lot to the door.   They have a secret... the garden behind has a stream that is a perfect perfect place to sit and watch the salmon when they are running.  Stop by and find out more about this hidden treasure in Silverdale.

Etta Projects - Auction

This past week I learned of an organization called Etta Projects from Dean & Paul of Judy's Junk & Java. Etta Turner was an amazing 16 year old who worked in Bolivia and is the inspiration behind Etta Projects.   "Etta Projects partners with Bolivian communities to identify, prioritize, and implement sustainable solutions to the health, education, and economic challenges of poverty."  

In 2009 Etta Projects helped 65 Bolivian school children plant harvest and then sell vegetables to their community, which had previously subsisted on yucca and rice. With proceeds they repaid Etta Projects for their seeds and brought water to their own school.  Gave 500 people their first clean water.  The resulting 90% less diarrhea in their families says it all. Provided the entire village a direct water system to their school and each home.

To support the wonderful work of Etta Projects we decided to donate an original oil painting by Walter Graham for the auction.  If you have a moment please check out this nonprofit organization and the good they do for the people of Bolivia.  

Painting to be auctioned on May 15, 2010

Raised in Chicago, he began his art career in 1922 when he entered the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts. He became an illustrator for Street and Smith Publishers which included works for "Western Story," "Western Life," and "Appaloosa News." In 1939, he helped form a commercial art studio in Chicago.  He later sold his interest in the commercial art studio and moved west where commissions for paintings, murals, and sculpture were frequent.

Walter Graham was a prolific painter, a savvy businessman, and respected artist.  Born in Toledo, Illinois in 1903.  In 1999 Walter received the Governors Arts Award for his outstanding service to the cultural life of the State of Washington.   At age 96 he was still painting in his Wenatchee studio.  A resident artist of the Wenatchee Valley for 50 years, Walter Graham passed away May 5, 2000.

His murals adorn the walls at Pangborn Airport, Alcoa Wenatchee Works, Rocky Reach Dam and many other public buildings.
