Transform an ordinary cigar box into an extraordinary work of art.   Layer papers, images and paint to create an awesome background, then fill it with found items.  Found items will be supplied for your remarkable project. (Please register early so we can plan on ample supplies.)  Check out sample at the store.  Bring basic tool kit.     

Please put a caption on the picture:  Class project will differ from sample depending on found items.

Postcard Friendship Friday - Miss Porter's School

Every once in a while I will sit and look through my post cards and pull a few to check out the history behind the picture.  With the card I am sharing today I did just that.  Wow was I in for a surprise.  

Miss Porter’s School, Farmington Connecticut has been around since 1843! In 1847 she had 25 students. A group of Framington fathers wanted their daughters to get the best education and encouraged the growth of the school.  In 1886 there were 62 graduates.  Miss Porter ran the school until her death in 1900. Then her nephew Robert Porter Keep and his wife managed the school. Robert Porter Keep Jr. became the headmaster.  The school remained private until 1943 when it was incorporated as a non-profit.  At one time it was refereed to as a finishing school for girls.

The curriculum taught at Porter's in the 19th century included Latin, French and German, spelling, reading, arithmetic, trigonometry, history and geography. Because Sarah Porter believed young women to be as capable of learning as young men, her curriculum also included chemistry, physiology, botany, geology and astronomy. The arts also were emphasized; Sarah Porter hired prominent men to teach drawing and give music lessons, and chamber music concerts were frequently given at the school. Each student was expected to design her course selection to meet her individual needs and talents. - Quoted from Miss Porter's School History

Composition for Collage: Week One Homework

I am taking a class taught by Claudine Hellmuth at  Big Picture Class.  This is my first online class... Composition for Collage, so far I am loving it.  Our first assignment is to create an asymmetrical collage. 

Starting with a sheet of BasicGrey 12x12 from the Porcelain collection, I painted a light coat of Claudine Hellmuth Gesso over part of the paper.

I love the print and colors of the paper, 

it was just too busy of a background for what I had in mind. 

I can't believe I have had this jar of gesso for a couple of years and never used it... 

I love the effect the gesso gives the paper.

I mounted (glued) the 12x12 onto a thick chipboard. 

Now for some images.  

I did a bit of searching as I had this idea running around in my head ever since I watched the videos Claudine Hellmuth did for the class.  I wanted birds, not just any birds.  I wanted flying birds, birds that flock together. BIG and little birds to give depth of field.  Keeping in mind the assignment is "asymmetry."  I got all of my bird images and the lady from Graphics Fairy.  She has so many images to use and has kindly posted them for free.  If you like vintage and collage her site is the place for you!!!

Above is my work in progress... I have cut out each bird, the lady, did some stamping.  I did make a mistake while I was stamping on the tissue... I did the stamping right on my project, a BIG NO NO.  (Stamp from Artistic Outpost: Jane's Country) I know better... what was I thinking, the ink bleed right through the tissue so I had to cover it up with more gesso!!!  Thank goodness for gesso. 

I glued all the pieces down. 

Waiting for it to dry.  Now for the placement of words. What words????  I am thinking strongly of using "The Missive".  Have to do a little research to see if a missive would have been sent during this period.  Or would something else work better.  Now that I look at this the bird in the middle should be higher... Hmmmmm.  The letter the bird is carrying doesn't show up... need to do something about that.  Yikes , the bird is already glued down. 

I plan to finish this on Sunday sometime... stop back by to see the final outcome.

Awesome Finds at the Thrift Store

Here are a few treasures I picked up recently...  if you know me then you are aware of my love affair with vintage paper!!!  

When I saw this I couldn't pass it up.  At first I thought is was a page from a calendar.  Then I found two others with page numbers on them.  Unless you know of a calendar with 22 pages I don't think this is a calendar page. 

This is an other wonderful find.  A book titled "The Century World's Fair Book for Boys and Girls"  by  Tudor Jenks. (C) 1893 by the Century Company, The De Vinne Press.  The book is about the World's Columbian Exposition held in Chicago.  The Fair ran from May 1, 1893 until October 30, 1893 with more than 27 million people attending.  Learn more HERE about the Fair!

Beautiful Fat Book

This is the last post from the art retreat in April.  We had an invitation to join a  "Fat Book" swap.  Ten of us participated.  Our retreat theme was "soar" as in birds.  The end results of our books is amazing, pictures do not do it justice.  Again, I would like to thank Jo, Cathy and Susan for all their hard work putting together such an amazing weekend.  

Cathy & Jo designed the beautiful cover.
