Layered Art Doll for Unruly PaperArts

It was a great honor to be the Spotlight Artist for the month of July at Unruly PaperArts.  The theme for the month was one of my favorites "Layer on Layer".  I used a lot of paints, inks, mists, paper, fabric, images to create layers upon layers in my art! I am sharing the project I made for my "Layer upon Layers" with my Layered Art Doll.

My Art Doll is a page in my Board Book called Fabulous Femmes.

Before adding anything to the page ink the edges.  Depending on the project will dictate the color or ink.  For this project black ink was used. I like using ink instead of paint because ink absorbs in to the book board.



Vintage Text Paper was added to the page. When covering a page cut the paper a little larger, use an emery board to sand down the edges. The ink around the edges will show.

The edge is distressed with Dew Drop Memento Toffee Crunch.  The page is gently inked with Memento Luxe Rhubarb Stalk then spritzed with Dylusions Ink Spray - Pomegranate





Add a thin sporadic layer of Duo adhesive to adhere gold leaf to one half the page.



Adhere Altered Pages collage images (head, wings, arms and torso) to thin chipboard (like cereal box). Fuzzy cut images. Cut Glitz frame in half and ink with Memento Luxe Rhubarb Stalk and Dew Drop Memento - Toffee Crunch.  Spray the wings with Shimmer Mist.  Adhere images 

Ink Leaky Shed chipboard crown with Delicata Golden Glitz ink and heat emboss with clear embossing powder.  To give the crown an enamel effect add embossing powder several times.  Top off the crown with Dew Drops.

Embellish with lace and Petaloo Flowers.

Altered Pages ~ Let Me Read Your Palm!

Thank you Jean for inviting me to be a member of the awesome Altered Pages Design Team!  I love collage and am excited to work with the wonderful products Altered Pages has to offer.

My inspiration was the beautiful image of the lady above, found on this Paris Collage Sheet!! This collage is created on a Manila Tag. First, paint a light blue wash with  Pearlescent Watercolors. Once it was dry use a brown ink and stamp swirls, then ink the edges of the tag and image and ink a vintage white paper doily and white lace. 

With a fine pen write "Let me read your palm" on the image. Adhere the doily, lace and image. From my personal stash I added the feather, chipboard palm, heart rhinestone and feather  with Sakura Crystal Lacquer. Complete it with the finishing touches a bit of ribbon and glitter!

Claudine Hellmuth:  I like them both! but for this one I really like the monochrome palette, it really pulls the grid together.

Composition for Collage: Week Four Homework

This is my final collage assignment for the class at Big Picture Classes... GRIDS.

All images from Claudine Hellmuth's handouts. I digitally played with the photos of men. Working with the grid... hope I didn't create a tangency or two!!!  This was my first attempt at digital art.  I have worked with individual photos before.  It was fun, but I still love cutting, pasting and painting.

You ask what is a "tangency" a tangency is when images just barely touch.

“Bad tangencies are well, bad, because they draw the viewer’s eye to the area where the objects meet and touch, they create an unwanted tension. No matter how good the rest of the composition is, the viewer’s eye will always be drawn back to the bad tangency and it will distract from the rest of the artwork.”

Claudine Hellmuth's comment:  "this grid came out super!! I love how the numbers in the background peek through! repeating all the different photos with the browns and black and white color scheme holding it all together!"

I may have to do one or two more of these this week!

Composition for Collage: Week Two Homework

In my online Composition for Collage class that Claudine Hellmuth is teaching we had to do a collage working with horizon.  I am hoping this one passes.  I have a couple of horizon lines!

My post in the classroom gallery: Horizon did you hear?  I think I may have too many horizon lines? Maybe I should have moved my image of the three of us more towards the middle... Yes that is my brother, sister and me!

Claudine Hellmuth's Comment: "def not too many horizon lines! I think this works really well!! to me the red dots work as a frontal horizon or grounding element and the blue in the back works as a distance horizon line like as if the ocean is behind them!"

I am taking my class at: Big Picture Class

Finished 1st Week Project for Claudine Helmuth's Online class!

My finished Asymmetrical Collage for my online class with Claudine Hellmuth at Big Picture Class. 

In my post earlier I went through the steps I was taking to complete my project (HERE).  I wasn't sure if I was going to give this a Title or a verse.  I tend to gravitate towards Jane Austen as my partner in the studio room.  If I am in there Pride & Prejudice is most likely on the screen, I know almost every word.  I got to thinking about all the letters Elizabeth received and a light bulb went off.... there must be something that will be perfect for my collage in P&J.

Composition for Collage: Week One Homework

I am taking a class taught by Claudine Hellmuth at  Big Picture Class.  This is my first online class... Composition for Collage, so far I am loving it.  Our first assignment is to create an asymmetrical collage. 

Starting with a sheet of BasicGrey 12x12 from the Porcelain collection, I painted a light coat of Claudine Hellmuth Gesso over part of the paper.

I love the print and colors of the paper, 

it was just too busy of a background for what I had in mind. 

I can't believe I have had this jar of gesso for a couple of years and never used it... 

I love the effect the gesso gives the paper.

I mounted (glued) the 12x12 onto a thick chipboard. 

Now for some images.  

I did a bit of searching as I had this idea running around in my head ever since I watched the videos Claudine Hellmuth did for the class.  I wanted birds, not just any birds.  I wanted flying birds, birds that flock together. BIG and little birds to give depth of field.  Keeping in mind the assignment is "asymmetry."  I got all of my bird images and the lady from Graphics Fairy.  She has so many images to use and has kindly posted them for free.  If you like vintage and collage her site is the place for you!!!

Above is my work in progress... I have cut out each bird, the lady, did some stamping.  I did make a mistake while I was stamping on the tissue... I did the stamping right on my project, a BIG NO NO.  (Stamp from Artistic Outpost: Jane's Country) I know better... what was I thinking, the ink bleed right through the tissue so I had to cover it up with more gesso!!!  Thank goodness for gesso. 

I glued all the pieces down. 

Waiting for it to dry.  Now for the placement of words. What words????  I am thinking strongly of using "The Missive".  Have to do a little research to see if a missive would have been sent during this period.  Or would something else work better.  Now that I look at this the bird in the middle should be higher... Hmmmmm.  The letter the bird is carrying doesn't show up... need to do something about that.  Yikes , the bird is already glued down. 

I plan to finish this on Sunday sometime... stop back by to see the final outcome.

ANOTHER PROJECT I CREATED AT THE ART RETREAT!

Here is another of my altered boxes... this time I used an old wooden  doll steamer trunk.  I just loved the depth of the box.  Going with a bird theme this time I adhered 7 Gypsies paper to the back of the box with a bit of old sheet music.  The yellow pattern paper is the original paper in the steamer trunk.  My Minds Eye pattern  papers on the the bird houses and the paper banner. 

Tim Holtz products - clock face and the number 14.  Melissa Frances - Keyhole.  

There are a lot of bits and pieces I picked up here and there.  The grandfather clock is a pencil sharpener. Other treasures: birdhouses, blocks wrapped in paper for birdhouse stands,  empty spools wrapped in paper, dresden foil, sticks with dried moss from my walks, an old fork and spoon, vintage key, poker chip, tiles from the game "Banana Grams",   birds, eggs, vintage jewelry piece, brass crown, brass birds on the spoon, and little bucket with a nest. 

I had a lot of fun putting all the things I had gathered together.  

A lot of detail in the box. 

 The original yellow paper is a perfect finish peaking out behind the papers.
